Klay Thompson Lands With Miami Heat as NBA Offseason Shake-Up Continues

Klay Thompson Miami Heat is now official, giving one of the NBA’s most accomplished shooters a new opportunity with a dramatically reshaped Miami roster.

The five-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion signed with the Heat after clearing waivers Sunday, ending his two-year stint with the Dallas Mavericks. Thompson agreed to a two-year contract worth about $11.5 million, with a player option for the second season, according to Associated Press reporting.

The move completes another major step in Miami’s aggressive offseason and gives the Heat a veteran shooting weapon to place alongside newly acquired superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and All-Star center Bam Adebayo.

Thompson Gets a Fresh Start in Miami

Thompson’s arrival represents a significant change after an underwhelming two-season run in Dallas.

The Mavericks acquired him from Golden State in a sign-and-trade in 2024, hoping his shooting would complement Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving.

That plan quickly unraveled.

Dallas traded Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2025, Irving suffered a major knee injury and Anthony Davis was later moved to Washington. The Mavericks ultimately finished 26-56 last season.

Thompson now has another chance to compete for a championship.

Miami Needed Exactly What Thompson Provides

The fit is straightforward.

Miami wanted more perimeter shooting after acquiring Antetokounmpo, one of the league’s most dominant interior players.

Thompson provides precisely that.

The veteran guard ranks fourth in NBA history with 2,899 made three-pointers and has shot 40.9% from beyond the arc throughout his career.

His ability to play without dominating the ball could make him particularly valuable alongside Giannis.

Defenses cannot easily collapse around Antetokounmpo if Thompson is positioned outside the three-point line.

A New Miami Big Three?

The Heat’s offseason has created an intriguing potential core.

Antetokounmpo arrived from Milwaukee in a blockbuster trade that sent Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware and Kasparas Jakučionis to the Bucks, along with significant draft capital.

Bam Adebayo remains Miami’s established centerpiece in the frontcourt.

Now Thompson gives the team a championship-tested perimeter scorer.

It may not be a traditional “Big Three” in the way Miami’s LeBron James era was structured, but the combination gives the Heat three players with very different strengths.

Thompson Still Has Elite Shooting Ability

At 36, Thompson is no longer the explosive two-way player he was during Golden State’s championship years.

But his shooting remains a major weapon.

Last season with Dallas, he averaged 11.7 points while shooting 38.3% from three-point range.

He made more than 200 three-pointers for the 11th time in his career.

For Miami, efficiency may matter more than volume.

The Heat do not need Thompson to create 20 shots every night.

They need him to punish defenses when Antetokounmpo attracts multiple defenders.

Championship Experience Adds Another Dimension

Thompson also brings something that cannot be measured by shooting percentages: championship experience.

He won four NBA titles with Golden State and was part of the famous “Splash Brothers” partnership with Stephen Curry.

He is also a five-time All-Star.

That experience could be valuable for a Miami team attempting to return to serious championship contention.

Miami’s Offseason Has Completely Changed the Team

The Thompson signing is only the latest major move.

Miami’s acquisition of Antetokounmpo was the offseason’s biggest transformation for the franchise.

The Heat also added Bobby Portis and another established three-point threat in Tim Hardaway Jr.

The result is a roster built around star power, shooting and veteran experience.

Miami appears to be betting that surrounding Antetokounmpo with reliable shooters will maximize his ability to attack the basket.

The Giannis-Thompson Combination Could Be Dangerous

The offensive theory is simple.

When Giannis drives toward the basket, defenses have to decide whether to help.

If they send additional defenders, Thompson can receive an open perimeter opportunity.

If defenders stay attached to Thompson, Giannis has more room to operate inside.

That dynamic could create opportunities for both players.

Adebayo adds another passing and scoring option, making it harder for defenses to focus exclusively on either star.

Thompson’s Miami Fit Is Also Personal

There are some unusual connections between Thompson and Miami.

He has spoken openly about his love of boating and the water, while the Heat play near Biscayne Bay.

Thompson also has Bahamian heritage, and the Bahamas is geographically close to South Florida.

Those factors made Miami an attractive destination beyond basketball.

But the basketball fit was clearly the most important factor.

A Chance to Rebuild His Reputation

The move also gives Thompson an opportunity to change the narrative surrounding the final years of his career.

His Dallas tenure did not produce the impact either side expected.

Now, he enters a team where his role can be much more clearly defined.

He does not have to carry an offense.

He does not need to be the primary creator.

He simply needs to shoot, defend within the team’s system and provide veteran leadership.

That could be a better environment for the veteran guard.

Miami’s Expectations Will Be Much Higher

The Heat went 43-39 last season.

That record was not enough to establish Miami as a championship contender.

The addition of Antetokounmpo changed those expectations.

Thompson’s arrival raises them again.

Miami will now be judged against the best teams in the Eastern Conference, and anything short of meaningful playoff success could be considered disappointing.

Health Will Be Important

One of the biggest questions surrounding Thompson is durability.

He missed two entire seasons earlier in his career after suffering major injuries.

At 36, managing his workload will be important.

Miami cannot afford to treat him like the younger version of Thompson who routinely played heavy minutes.

The Heat will need to preserve his legs and maximize his effectiveness during the games that matter most.

His Role Could Change Throughout the Season

Thompson could start, come off the bench or move between roles depending on Miami’s lineup combinations.

The important point is that his shooting provides flexibility.

The Heat can place him alongside Antetokounmpo and Adebayo or use him with second-unit players to create more spacing.

That versatility could become particularly valuable during the playoffs.

A Major NBA Offseason Gets Another Headline

The Klay Thompson Miami Heat move is another indication of how dramatically the NBA landscape has changed this summer.

Miami has added one of the league’s biggest stars in Antetokounmpo and now one of its most accomplished shooters in Thompson.

For Thompson, the move offers something equally important: another chance.

His Dallas chapter ended without the success originally envisioned.

Miami provides an opportunity to compete for another championship while playing a role that matches what he still does best.

If Thompson remains healthy and returns to anything close to his career shooting standard, the Heat could have one of the NBA’s most interesting new lineups heading into the 2026-27 season.

And for a veteran who has already won almost everything basketball can offer, Miami may be his most important opportunity yet to add one more championship chapter to his career.
