49ers and Saints Swap Depth Players as Regular Season Approaches

49ers Saints trade activity has produced an unusual late-preseason player-for-player swap, with San Francisco acquiring veteran linebacker Deion Jones from New Orleans in exchange for running back Zamir White as both teams address depth concerns before the 2026 NFL regular season.

The move comes just days before NFL teams must reduce their rosters from 90 players to 53. Rather than waiting for the final wave of cuts, the two organizations have chosen to address specific needs through a direct exchange.

For San Francisco, the priority is adding experience at linebacker. For New Orleans, the focus is strengthening a running-back room affected by injuries.

San Francisco Adds Veteran Experience

The 49ers Saints trade gives San Francisco a player with considerably more NFL experience than many of the younger linebackers competing for roster spots.

Deion Jones, 31, spent the majority of his career with the Atlanta Falcons and became one of the league’s most productive linebackers during his prime.

He earned Pro Bowl honors in 2017 and recorded at least 100 tackles in five of his first six NFL seasons.

More recently, however, Jones has primarily played a reserve role.

He spent last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, recording 29 total tackles, and signed with New Orleans earlier this month.

Now he gets another opportunity in San Francisco.

Reunion With Raheem Morris

The trade also contains a familiar connection.

Jones previously played under 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris during his time with the Falcons.

Morris coached Jones in Atlanta from 2016 through 2020, giving the veteran linebacker an established relationship with a member of San Francisco’s current coaching staff.

That familiarity could make the transition easier.

Jones already understands Morris’ defensive philosophy, terminology and expectations.

For a player joining a new team so close to the regular season, that experience can be valuable.

Why San Francisco Wanted Another Linebacker

The 49ers have significant talent at the top of their linebacker group, including Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw.

But depth has become a concern.

The team has dealt with injuries in the position group, while several younger players are competing for roster spots.

Adding an experienced veteran gives San Francisco another option if injuries strike during the season.

Jones may not be expected to return to his Pro Bowl-level production.

Instead, his value could come from providing reliable depth, special-teams experience and knowledge of the defensive system.

New Orleans Has a Different Problem

For the Saints, the reason for the trade is much more straightforward.

New Orleans needs running-back depth.

Star running back Alvin Kamara is expected to miss several weeks after suffering an MCL sprain, while rookie Devin Neal also suffered an injury during Saturday’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams.

That left the Saints with fewer reliable options behind Travis Etienne Jr.

Zamir White now enters that competition.

White Brings NFL Experience

White previously spent four seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders before joining San Francisco earlier this month.

During his NFL career, he has accumulated 736 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns and 152 receiving yards across 45 games.

His numbers are not spectacular, but the Saints are not necessarily looking for a star.

They need depth.

With Kamara sidelined and Neal dealing with an injury, White provides another experienced option who can handle carries if necessary.

Timing Makes the Deal Significant

The timing of the 49ers Saints trade is particularly interesting.

Both players had only recently joined their respective teams.

San Francisco signed White on August 12, while New Orleans signed Jones on August 8.

That means neither player had established a major role before being moved again.

In White’s case, his position on the 49ers’ depth chart had already become more complicated after Christian McCaffrey returned to practice.

With McCaffrey healthy, San Francisco could afford to move White in exchange for a more pressing defensive need.

McCaffrey’s Return Helps Explain the Move

The trade comes on the same day McCaffrey returned to practice.

That development significantly improves San Francisco’s running-back situation.

McCaffrey remains the centerpiece of the backfield, while Jordan James and other young players provide additional options.

The 49ers also recently signed Khalil Herbert and have several backs competing for roster positions.

White therefore became more expendable.

Saints Need Immediate Running-Back Help

The Saints’ situation is different.

Kamara’s injury changes the team’s depth requirements.

New Orleans signed Etienne to a four-year deal during the offseason and had planned to use multiple running backs.

But injuries have complicated that plan before the regular season has even started.

White can now provide additional insurance.

Whether he becomes a significant part of the 53-man roster will depend on how the Saints’ other running backs recover.

Both Teams Are Thinking Beyond Preseason

The exchange demonstrates how NFL roster construction works in the final weeks before the season.

Teams are not simply evaluating talent.

They are evaluating position depth, injuries, special teams value, experience and potential roster availability.

A player who may not fit one team’s needs can suddenly become valuable to another.

That appears to be what happened here.

The Roster Deadline Is Approaching

The timing also reflects the approaching roster deadline.

NFL teams must soon reduce their rosters from 90 players to 53, meaning every position is being evaluated carefully.

The 49ers Saints trade allows both organizations to solve specific problems before making those final decisions.

San Francisco gets a veteran linebacker.

New Orleans gets an experienced running back.

Neither team had to wait for the waiver process to find help.

What It Means for the 49ers

For San Francisco, the immediate question is how Jones fits into the linebacker rotation.

He may provide depth behind the starters while also contributing on special teams.

His relationship with Morris could make him particularly useful during the transition.

The 49ers will now evaluate him during the final preseason period before deciding his exact role.

What It Means for the Saints

New Orleans will be watching White closely.

The team needs to determine whether he can provide enough production to remain on the final roster.

His previous NFL experience gives him an advantage, particularly with Kamara unavailable.

If the Saints’ other running backs return quickly, however, the competition could become crowded again.

A Small Trade With Potential Importance

The 49ers Saints trade may not dominate the headlines like a blockbuster NFL deal involving star players.

But these are the kinds of moves that can become important over the course of a season.

San Francisco is adding veteran insurance at linebacker.

New Orleans is addressing a sudden shortage at running back.

Both teams are making adjustments before the regular season begins.

And with the 53-man roster deadline approaching, there may be more moves ahead.

For now, the swap represents a practical solution to two different problems—and a reminder that in the NFL, even depth players can become valuable pieces when injuries and roster decisions reshape a team’s plans.
